New Day, Timeless Mission

Our History

In 1844, the industrial revolution beckoned young men to journey from their country roots to London for work. One of them, 22-year-old George Williams (a farmer-turned-department store worker) recognized the despair and dangerous influences that were rampant in the tenement housing areas where they lived.

To combat the dangers, Williams and 11 friends organized the first Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), a refuge of Bible study and prayer. The YMCA was unique in its drive to meet the social needs of members across the rigid social classes of England.

The first U.S. YMCA was founded on December 29, 1851, by retired Boston sea captain Thomas Valentine Sullivan. In his work as a marine missionary, he created this safe “home away from home” for sailors and merchants at the Old South Church in Boston.

Today, the Y engages more than 10,000 neighborhoods across the United States. By nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the nation’s health and well-being, and supporting and serving our neighbors, the Y ensures that everyone has the opportunity to become healthier, more confident, connected and secure.
